Everything depends on the grinder, because it is the heart of every mill. Most importantly, it gently grinds the coffee beans without generating too much frictional heat: heat destroys the aroma, which can lead to a bitter taste in the coffee. In addition, a good grinder should grind as homogeneously as possible, i.e. produce coffee particles of the same size as possible. This is the only way to extract the aroma evenly during the brewing process. Coffee grinders with a disc grinder or a conical grinder are particularly recommended. The former are made of robust stainless steel or ceramic, and have two concave discs that can be adjusted depending on the degree of grinding. Coffee grinders with a conical grinder are particularly recommended, as this grinds the beans particularly gently, as only little frictional heat is generated. We would therefore generally recommend hand coffee grinders with a conical grinder.

Hand mills are available in all price ranges. The cheapest and at the same time most popular are the modern models from Hario, which always do well in tests. Although they are “merely” made of plastic, they have a very good grinder. In addition, they are nice and small and almost indestructible. Those who prefer a stainless steel look should go with the Porlex Tall II (approx. 64 euros) with its indestructible hand lever are well advised. It convinces with a high-quality ceramic conical grinder and also has a wheel on the lid with which the degree of grinding can be adjusted in no time at all. Porlex stands for quality, durability and, above all, particularly precise grinding results. The Porlex Tall produces approx. 30 g of ground coffee, the smaller Porlex Mini II (approx. 64 euros) produces approx. 20 g. The latter is ideal for on the go!

If you like timeless design, then we recommend the Comandante C40 MK3 Nitro Blade, which is one of the most expensive with a steep price of around 230 euros hand mill counts. But the wood, stainless steel, and hard plastic design, and patented knife-quality conical stainless steel grinder, more than make it worth it.
