frequently asked Questions

What are the differences between the Cafec filters?

All CAFEC filter papers (except the Light Roast Filter) have "Two-Side Crepe", i.e. the paper has been dried with hot air so that the crepe remains on both sides. This ensures a stable, fast flow of water. Conventional filter papers are dried with a heating roller so that the crepe is pressed down on one side.

The traditional filters differ from the abaca filters mainly in the material. Both are made from paper pulp, but the Abaca filters are still made with a proportion of Abaca (Manila hemp). Abaca fibers are four times as strong as normal pulp fibers, but only half as thin. The Abaca fibers give the filters good toughness and elasticity.

With the Abaca+, Cafec has launched a further development of the popular Abaca filter. A new manufacturing method, the so-called "Fine-Grained" method, gives the Abaca+ filters an even more uniform paper texture, which is intended to ensure an even, very fast water flow.

With the Light Roast, Medium-Dark Roast and Cafec has developed dark roast filters that are specially tailored to the different coffee roasts. The different filters have different paper densities that control the flow of water and give the cup a balanced, rich flavor or sweetness depending on the coffee roast. The water temperature that should be selected when using the filter is indicated on the packaging of the respective filter.

What does the name Cafec stand for?

The name Cafec literally means "Coffee Always Flares Everyone's Courage". The brand was founded to enable everyone to enjoy a good coffee at home. The belief of the Japanese brand is to put a smile on the face of every coffee lover with a well-brewed coffee.

What is osmotic pressure?

You may have heard of the word "osmosis" before. Osmosis describes the process in which two substances are separated by a semi-permeable membrane. Since the two substances have different concentrations, over time the substance with the higher concentration begins to pass through the membrane and enter the space of the substance with a lower concentration. This process continues until equilibrium is reached. Using the example of the brewing process of coffee, this is called “osmotic flow”. You create osmotic pressure by continuously pouring water over the coffee powder so that it can pass through the filter layer. There is a difference in concentration between coffee essence and water and the pleasant taste of the coffee gets into the coffee liquid due to the osmotic pressure. This gives your coffee a particularly intense, full aroma.

What is meant by "blooming"?

Blooming is a process of brewing filter coffee. At the beginning of the brewing process, water is added to the freshly ground coffee powder so that it is moistened and begins to swell. This part of the brewing process is called "blooming". Only then is the coffee brewed by pouring the hot water over the coffee in circles from the inside to the outside.
