How to use a coffee maker?

How the coffee is prepared depends entirely on the product you have chosen. If you use a Chemex or a hand filter, for example, you prepare your coffee using the pour-over method. This means that you place a suitable paper filter in your maker and fill it with freshly ground coffee powder. This is then poured over with hot water and the coffee begins to drip into your collecting vessel, for example a cup or a coffee pot.

If, however, you use a French press, you don't need a coffee filter. With this method of preparation, you fill the ground coffee beans directly into the pot and pour hot water over them. After a short rest period, you place the sieve attachment, also called a plunger, on the pot and slowly press it down so that the coffee powder is pressed towards the bottom. Therefore, you should grind your coffee medium to coarsely with this brewing method.

The AeroPress, on the other hand, works similarly to a French Press, but requires a paper coffee filter. The coffee-water mixture is filtered through this at the end of the brewing process.

How long does the coffee need to brew in the coffee maker?

This depends entirely on the preparation method you choose. With a French press, the preparation time is usually three to five minutes. You should keep an eye on this time so that your coffee is not under- or over-extracted. If the brewing time is shorter, the coffee will be watery and thin, but if it is longer, the coffee will taste bitter.

With the AeroPress, the resting time after stirring is one to two minutes, depending on the desired intensity.

Pour-over methods do not require any time for the coffee to brew. You just need to wait for the so-called blooming after the first infusion before adding more water. If you use a medium grind, the brewing process should take about three to four minutes.

What should I look for when buying a coffee maker?

First and foremost, before buying a coffee maker, you should consider what you want to use it for. While a hand filter and a French press are only suitable for filter coffee, the AeroPress is a true all-rounder that you can also use to make espresso or cold brew. Another point to consider when buying is that coffee from different makers tastes different. For mild coffee, you should use a hand filter or a Chemex carafe, while for stronger coffee, the French press is better. The coffee makers also have different capacities. There are often different sizes so that you can choose the right size for your needs. The common coffee makers can be differentiated according to their functionality: pour-over and full immersion.

The pour-over method uses a coffee filter for preparation. This category includes hand filters and Chemex carafes. Here, the coffee is prepared using a paper filter, just like with a coffee machine. Unlike classic filter coffee from a machine, however, with the pour-over method with a hand filter you can influence the speed and distribution of the water. You can also choose the perfect brewing temperature with the right kettle . Coffee prepared using the pour-over method is rather mild and not very acidic.

The full immersion preparation method, on the other hand, is mainly found in a French press. In this preparation method, the coffee powder is mixed directly with water and then the coffee grounds are pressed towards the bottom with a stamp. For this reason, you should choose a coarser grind for this brewing method than for the pour-over preparation. Due to the lack of a paper filter, more oils and bitter substances get into the coffee during preparation, so that the coffee from the French press is stronger in intensity. The AeroPress, on the other hand, contains elements of both preparation methods, as the coffee-water mixture is pressed through a paper filter into the cup under pressure.
